What a Snow Day Looks Like on Our Farm

Most days are fairly mild here on the farm, but today looks different. It's snowing in southern Kentucky today and also snowed on Saturday as well.

Today is Monday if you are wondering.

On Sunday we had rain because it warmed to 40 degrees and my creek and pond flooded. We've had all kinds of weather this weekend. As I am looking out my window right now it is pouring the snow. I am kind of in disbelief; this is actually the most snow we have had in several years. Definitely the most snow since I started raising animals on the farm last year.

My farm chores this morning required me to zip into my husband's coveralls (that he never wears). I also had on a long sleeve shirt, a hoodie, and my fleece jacket, a toboggan, and some insulated gloves that I cannot move my fingers in, but I wear them so I can at least feel my fingers. I took my coat with me in case I needed it, but it's so hard to move in it.

This morning, I had to make sure the goats and the donkeys had water, so I mixed up 5 tablespoons of molasses in a five-gallon bucket with water and started making the trek over to their fence. I had placed the bucket in my wagon and since I don't have lids for these buckets, I used press n' seal to make sure none sloshed out of the bucket.

I get to the gate so that I can place the bucket inside the fence and the latch is frozen and it isn't moving. So, I picked up the bucket and spilled a little and lifted it over the gate and on the ground. I procced to fill their buckets with feed and place some hay next to the fence so that they could eat on that today.

The pigs were next. Of course, their feed bin was frozen shut. I had to get my butane torch and thaw the door to the bin. The pigs were delighted when I was finally able to feed them. They sifted through the snow and feed to fill their bellies.

Nothing was really different about my chores today except for the cold temperatures and the snow. Feeding went normal, giving the water was different since we usually use a pool, it's frozen right now even with the saltwater bottle I placed in it. Next year will definitely need to invest in some heated waterers. I will also have to invest in some solar to run these things since there is no electric near the animals.
